The Black Friday Checkout Playbook: Send Email, SMS and Ad Clicks to a Full Cart

Black Friday is Friday, November 27 this year. Most of the traffic you pay for or earn that weekend will come from an email, a text or an ad that promised a specific deal. This playbook is about making that link open the deal itself, already in the cart, so nobody lands on your homepage and has to go looking for it.

Why every extra click costs more in November

Picture the usual Black Friday email. The subject line says "The winter bundle, 30% off, today only," and the button goes to the homepage. The shopper now has to find three products, pick a size and colour for each, add them one at a time, open the cart and remember the code. Each of those steps is a chance to decide to come back later, and on Black Friday "later" usually means one of the other tabs they've got open.

In Baymard Institute's survey of US online shoppers, 17% of those who'd abandoned an order during checkout said the process was too long or complicated. That figure only covers checkout. Finding the product and choosing variants happen before it.

You've also paid for that click, either in a crowded ad auction or in a send to a list that won't be any more patient because the offer is good.

What a preloaded cart link does

A preloaded cart link is one URL that builds the cart for the shopper. In Cart Rocket, each link comes from a preset. The preset holds the exact products, variants and quantities the campaign is selling, and its discounts: line-item, cart-wide and shipping discounts, plus any existing Shopify discount codes you want applied automatically, so nobody types a code.

You also choose where the link lands (straight to checkout by default, or the cart page, or Shop Pay), set rules for who can use it, when it's active and how many times it can be redeemed, and add UTMs, custom parameters and optional order tags so each link reports its own orders, revenue and AOV.

If shoppers need to choose a size or colour, turn on the options page before checkout. It opens in your theme with the deal's products and prices, lets the shopper change the variant, and keeps the discount on whichever variant they pick.

Which Black Friday campaigns should use a preloaded cart

If the message sells a specific cart, the link should open that cart. If the message asks people to browse, send them somewhere they can browse.

Bundles and gift sets

A bundle is several decisions made in advance, and a bundle link keeps them made: every item and variant lands in the cart with the bundle pricing applied. Use line-item discounts to take the money off the hero product and keep accessories at full margin. The holiday gift bundles guide covers which bundles to build.

Gift with purchase

If the gift is fixed to one offer ("buy the set, get the travel pouch"), add the gift to the preset and discount that line, so the shopper sees it in the cart before paying. If the gift depends on what's in the cart or unlocks at a spend threshold, that logic belongs at checkout. Smart Checkout Widgets has a good breakdown of free gift mechanics for Black Friday, including how to protect gift inventory.

Restock and back-in-stock sends

If a best-seller sold out in early November and you've got stock back for the sale, the people who asked to be notified already know what they want. Send them a link with that variant in the cart. Cart Rocket's Automations page has a Shopify Flow recipe for restock alerts. You build the workflow in Flow by following its steps and paste the cart link into the email action.

VIP early access

Restrict a preset to a Shopify customer segment or to specific customers, set its start time for Thursday evening and send it to your best customers before the public sale opens. Anyone outside the segment can't use it, so "early access" in the email means what it says. If the offer is aggressive, add a per-customer limit (that one needs the shopper to be logged in).

Doorbusters

Cap total redemptions on loss-leaders so the link itself stops at "first 200 orders." The Cyber Monday flash sales playbook goes further into scheduled drops and caps.

Where not to use one

Skip it for a "shop the whole sale" email, a gift guide with thirty options, or anything where the shopper needs to compare. Send those to a collection. Someone who hasn't chosen yet will mostly just empty a cart you filled for them.

Match the landing mode to the channel

SMS and high-intent paid traffic can go straight to checkout, because the shopper has already said yes to the offer. Bundles, gift sets and anything with several items usually read better on the cart page, where people can see what they're getting before they pay. Creator and social traffic on phones suits Shop Pay, so returning Shop Pay users can pay without filling in a form. Email depends on the offer: a single hero product can go to checkout, and a bundle often works better in the cart first.

Setting it up

  1. Build one preset per offer and name it so reports stay readable: bfcm-bundle, bfcm-vip, bfcm-doorbuster.
  2. Make one link per channel. It's the same preset with different UTMs for email, SMS, Meta and Google, so on Saturday morning you know which channel earned the rest of the budget.
  3. In the editor's Tracking section, turn on Tag orders (see Tag orders) so orders from each cart link carry a tag like bfcm-bundle. Existing order tags stay as they are, and your ops team can filter the weekend's orders in Shopify admin or use the tag to start a Shopify Flow workflow.
  4. For SMS and email sends to known customers, turn on Checkout details and add your tool's merge tags to the link (for example ?email={email}&first_name={first_name}), so checkout opens with their email and name filled in. Only do this in messages sent to one person, because anyone who opens that link sees those details.
  5. Schedule in UTC, because active dates are set and enforced in UTC. Midnight Eastern on November 27 is 05:00 UTC and midnight Pacific is 08:00 UTC. If you enter local midnight as UTC, a "live at midnight" Eastern link opens five hours late.
  6. Give every sale preset an end time so nobody has to switch anything off on Tuesday morning.

Test everything before peak week

Do this in the first week of November, while there's still time to fix what breaks.

  1. Open every link on a phone, logged out, in a private window. Then open it again from inside the real email and SMS, because in-app browsers behave differently from Safari.
  2. Check that any Shopify discount code attached to a preset exists in Shopify, is active for the whole sale and combines with anything else you're running.
  3. Re-copy links after editing a preset, so the link you paste into your email or SMS tool is current.
  4. Open a scheduled link before its start time and an expired one after its end, so you know what shoppers will see (they're sent to the product or home page with a short notice). For VIP links, try one as a customer outside the segment.
  5. Place a real test order through at least one link. Check it appears in Cart Rocket's Analytics under the right campaign and that the order tag landed.
  6. Check stock on every variant in every bundle, and decide now what you'll do if one sells out mid-sale: swap the variant or end the preset.

Then plan for the carts that don't finish

Shoppers abandon one-click carts too, and the standard abandoned cart sequence assumes the price will be the same next week. Our guide to abandoned cart email timing for Black Friday covers what to change in your flow, what to say, and how to reopen the exact cart the shopper left.
